Full Day Lanterns Workshop
Create 4 panels to be placed in a black or white lantern frame, to display in your home or garden!
Service Description
From beautiful Tiffany lampshades from the late 1800s and elaborate chandeliers, through to simple candle holders and Christmas decorations with fairy lights making them sparkle, Stained Glass can transform the feeling and look of a space when changing lights come into play. In fact, it is often described as “The art of light” due to the contrast of dark solder lines to block light and the translucent glass to then throw rays of light patterns and colours around your room. New for 2026, this lantern making workshop with Kate is perfect for both beginners and those who have attended previous glass sessions, who would like to try a slightly bigger and different challenge. These lanterns make a stunning addition to any home, or a wonderful gift and can be used indoors or out. During this full day workshop, we will talk you through and demonstrate the process of the tiffany foiling method step-by-step to create 4 small identical panels to fit inside the provided metal lantern frame. There will be a selection of simple designs to choose from on the day, ranging from classical Victorian and Art Deco styles, geometric patterns through to landscapes and sunsets. Alternatively, why not bring along some ideas on the day to discuss with Kate when you arrive? Please note, the photos below show example of Kate’s work, and do not represent the exact patterns we will be completing on the day, although will be used for inspiration! Starting with an introduction to different types of glass and design, we’ll cover how to handle and work with glass safely, before practicing cutting and shaping individual pieces of clear glass. Once you feel comfortable with this skill, you can then go on to deciding on your pattern and selecting from the wide variety of textured and coloured glass available on the day and starting to create your panels! There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and due to the small group size, everyone will be able to work at their own pace and have their own equipment, so no waiting in line! In the second half of the day, we will cover soldering and assembly, so that at the end of the day you are able to take home your fully finished piece. All tools, materials and safety equipment will be supplied. However, due to the nature of the craft, please can you ensure you are wearing closed shoes (no sandals, crocs or sling-backs) and that long hair is tied back.
