Another bespoke internal window, but this time to go above a door into a newly renovated bathroom. Initial contact was made in September 2024 and the commission accepted and deposit paid in November.
Due to it's position above a door and exposed to humid conditions, it was important to consider the impact of moisture and vibrations from the door on the construction of this window, as well as the height and lighting due to it's position. In this case, a leaded construction would provide us with the best strength and also 'weather proof' it due to the cementing process.
As the clients live about a 3 hour round trip from my studio, I carried out a video call with them at a convenient time, so they could show me the space over the camera and at different times of day, and we could discuss their likes and dislikes and I could talk them through potential options for installation and how to correctly measure the space.
They also sent me a 'mood board' of styles and work they had previously seen of mine and also on 'Pinterest', so I could ensure the design perfectly fitted their vision!
Once we had decided on the final 'cartoon' (this is what glass artists call the mock up of the final design with examples of colours and the lead lines shown), a 50% deposit was paid and their commission slot reserved for the start of the new year.
During the project, I kept them updated on progress via direct emails, but also social media, so others could share in the journey and appreciate the collaborative approach and processes involved in making a piece like this.
The window was completed and collected in March 2025 by the clients, and taken home to be fitted, which they did themselves using batons to secure it in place. They very kindly provided me with photos of the piece in situ, and I have to say I think both them and me are pretty chuffed with it!
