Stained glass art has captivated people for centuries with its vibrant colors and intricate patterns. From ancient churches to modern homes, this unique form of art brings beauty, light, and a sense of wonder wherever it is displayed.

The History of Stained Glass
Stained glass originated in the ancient world, with the earliest examples dating back to the Roman Empire. These original creations were simple and predominantly used in windows to depict biblical stories. As time progressed, the Middle Ages saw a significant evolution in stained glass craftsmanship, particularly in Europe.
During this period, churches and cathedrals became adorned with magnificent stained glass windows. Artists combined colors, textures, and brilliant designs to create works that not only illuminated the interiors of religious buildings but also told stories to those who might not be able to read.
Famous cathedrals like Notre Dame in Paris and Chartres Cathedral in France are remarkable examples, where stained glass windows play an essential role in the overall aesthetic. As is the recently restored Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, a stunning example of more contemporary and highly colourful glass windows that flood the space with rainbows and makes my heart beat faster every time I think of it (google for images - it will blow your mind and I couldn't use them here due to copyright!)
Techniques of Stained Glass
Stained glass involves a variety of techniques and expertise. The art form typically begins with designing the piece on paper. Artists sketch their ideas and plan out the colors and shapes, ensuring cohesiveness with light and space. Some common techniques in stained glass artistry include:
Glass Cutting: This involves using a glass cutter to shape the glass according to the design. Precision is crucial here, as well-fitting pieces create a seamless look when assembled.
Painting: Once the glass is cut, artists can further embellish it with painted details. These can be outlines, shading, or even intricate designs, which are then fired in a kiln to set the paint. This is where the original term 'Stained' glass originated, as early makers had a limited range of paints they could use, one of which is called 'Silver stain' and rather than sitting on the surface of the glass, combines with it to turn it a beautiful shade of yellow.
An example of a piece I created at a recent ‘Glass Painting Masterclass’ I attended - traditional black trace lines, stippled shading and silver stain…. Lead Came: After the glass pieces are prepared, they are assembled using lead came, which is a type of metal channel. This method allows the piece to become sturdy while also forming interesting lines and patterns.
Copper Foil: An alternative to lead came, the copper foil technique involves wrapping the edges of glass pieces with a thin copper foil. This method permits more intricate designs and is often used in smaller projects.
Stained glass can be a remarkable way to define spaces, allowing natural light to filter in while creating an atmosphere of beauty and tranquility.
Is Stained Glass Art an Expensive Hobby?
Many people wonder whether stained glass art is an expensive endeavor. The cost can vary greatly based on several factors. Here’s a breakdown:
Startup Costs: Starting out requires some initial investment in tools such as glass cutters, safety equipment, and glass itself. A basic kit may range from £120 to £300.
Materials: The cost of stained glass can vary significantly depending on color, texture, and quality. Specialty glasses can be more expensive but add unique elements to projects. Budgeting £10 to £25 per square foot for glass is a good estimate. Hand made, mouth blown glass can reach up to £65 per square foot!
Workshops and Classes: For beginners, attending workshops or classes can enhance skill and knowledge. Prices can range from £50 for a single class to several hundred pounds for a full course or weekly sessions.
Projects: Simple projects can be done at a minimal cost, but to create larger or more complex pieces, costs can rise quickly. Creating a full window panel might cost anywhere from £250 to many thousands, depending on design, materials and whether glass painting has been used.
However, it's important to remember stained glass isn't just about creating windows and doors! Think outside the box and the wonderful settings you can display your work, say as smaller window hangings, in stands with a light behind them, as garden art or as beautiful gifts and ornaments at much more affordable costs. Art Museums, exhibitions or local buildings: Many art museums hold exquisite collections of stained glass. Visiting these spaces can offer insights into historical contexts and artistic techniques. However, don't limit yourself to viewing stained glass! I take inspiration from patterns and decoration I see in stone carving, paintings, multi-media exhibitions, even tattoo art! Some of my favourite places to explore are National Trust properties, and those built during the Arts & crafts movement, where every aspect of the building is a feast for your eyes and can be translated into contemporary or traditional glass designs.

Online Platforms: Websites like Pinterest, Instagram, and dedicated stained glass forums showcase many creative designs. Searching specific tags related to stained glass can lead to unique and modern ideas. There are also a multitude of websites, FaceBook groups and glass manufacturers that offer free access to smaller designs that are great to get started with. Embracing the Legacy of Stained Glass
Sadly in 2023, Historic Stained Glass window making as profession was placed on the Heritage Craft Society's 'Red List' of critically endangered crafts. This has stimulated attempts to support sustainability through a limited number of apprenticeships, training funds and multiple initiatives to transfer skills on such as more local workshops, online courses and resources.
Stained glass art is far more than just a craft; it is a legacy spanning millennia. This astonishing artistry connects us with the past while breathing life into modern spaces.
